ETHICAL & ECO POLICIES
Here's what makes us different from the rest...
All our products are Fairtrade & organic - we're the real thing
We only use good quality cotton; organic, pure & strong
We are responsible for how our products are made
The eco-system & environment are never far from our thoughts
We're independent: working together as a family - in business
At our Lewes workshop, in the heart of the Sussex Downs, we create textiles with ethics. We work like craftspeople to develop products that are both beautiful & useful. Our team of specialists work on everything: from fibre, yarn, fabric, cut, finish, colour & decoration to packaging.
Unlike the fast-fashion industry, we start by thinking about our customers & taking time to understand what you truly need. We don't chase any glamorous illusions.
Where it's made
Back in 1998, Abi & Thomas Petit, pioneered the introduction of ethical textiles into the UK.
"Where possible, we source & make our cotton products locally. But we're also deeply committed to the Agrocel farming project in Kutch - western India - where the lives of small-scale farming families have been transformed by our work & support over the years. We work to serve the farming communities, so logically; our work starts in the cotton fields - with farmers that work in harmony with the earth.
All the cotton we use comes from farming groups that we know & is certified organic & Fairtrade. No shortcuts."
Abi & Thomas Petit, Co-founders & Directors of Gossypium
Our History
India, 1998
Abi & Thomas started out in the cotton fields of Kutch, in western India. Being ideologists, they went in search of cotton that wouldn't harm the environment or exploit Indian farmers.
...From India to Brighton Beach
Gossypium began its life on Brighton Beach - via a market stall - & from there Abi & Thomas soon learned what people were looking for in organic cotton & adapted their range accordingly.
...Nine years later...
Today Gossypium is a leading brand in Fairtrade-certified organic cotton fashion. "All our products are designed in-house & we like to think we stand alone, naturally." Abi & Thomas Petit, Directors
